no, it's not the relay, I am using an image resizer on the way down so when you go to the search page it doesn't try to download a bunch of 4000x8000 files and instead downloads 100x100 images.

The imgproxy was down.

I'm going to add an option to switch to a different one and to fallback to not using one when the imgproxy is not working.
