On the whole Instagram is bad, however there is(/was) a quiet vibrant group of memesters and jesters there. A lot of them have been banned, moved to twitter or gone under different names (I'm not up to date). It's not all just gym selfies and infographics. Although it is mostly that lolol

Oh and just to be clear, I have no interest in an Instagram twitter clone nor rejoining instagram in general lol. Just thought I'd add that there was/is/can/could be interesting content there (albeit perhaps quite rare).
I deal w IG, but I’m not a woman nor any already-famous person so my content (mostly music related) doesn’t get much reach. You’ve gotta be famous already or a hot female to get traction there. Coming up VIA IG, I don’t think is common, despite what those social media “gurus” say.
I'm not sure that's 100% true but it is mostly true lol. Certainly easier as you described. You can get a fairly decent following just by eg making your own memes, cos the majority of content there is recycled. That was my experience anyway. But that is partly luck. Partly established accounts reposting you (when they're not just stealing from you lol)
