I need some help #gunstr

I have my AR-15 mostly built but there are some nagging questions I haven't been able to find answers to online.

My biggest question is how a clamp-style free float barrel is supposed to be installed. Are you supposed to crank the screws hard enough to pinch the metal together, or is there supposed to be some kind of tension piece that goes between them that I'm missing?

Second question is what in the hell does this little tiny screw supposed to go to?

Is that the set screw for the takedown pin detent?

It is indeed. Thank you for naming it, I was able to look up some videos and know what it's for now 🥳

You’re welcome

Your upper should have a barrel nut. Regardless if there is a freefloat handgusrd or not. All barrels are 'free floating', handguards can freefloat, clamp, or screw into upper and/or barrel.

I'm probably using incorrect terms.

I know the barrel nut is installed, and the rail is over top of it. The base of the rail where it meets the upper has a section where two hex screws secure it.

But I got the handguard/rail dirt cheap and idk if it's intended to tighten until the metals wings clamp together, or if there is a missing piece that is supposed to go between them, like a washer or something else to provide tension.

Gotcha. I would think not, but every manufacturer is different.

Try to crank down a bit and check it

Many don't. Some have a spacer. If it's cheap, likely not. There should have been a torque spec to hit. If not, we can infer a torque spec from the size of the bolts.

Thank you! I should be able to look up what's needed from that. 🤙

Lemme know if you need any more help. I've built a few and repaired way too many ARs.
