ah interesting, I would have thought it was the tops with the spores that were needed but I know nothing yet!

The fruiting bodies can revert back into mycelium and then spread again. Growing from spores is more like a reproductive cycle. Also might be more difficult to achieve in a less sterile compost environment vs a “clone” from a fruiting body.
