Meshtastics were used and distributed during hurricane Helene relief. I would definitely list it as emergency comms but can be useful for automation around the citadel without WiFi.

I wouldn’t say the tech fell short. Battery and Antenna configuration are important for endurance and distance. Setting up high points is critical for long range base of comms. Robust vehicle/mobile configurations are best for utility. Setup as node/repeater. Overall meshtastic belongs in the PACE plan at the A or C level behind starlink & HAM solution depending on HAM qualifications.

I happen to have 2 meshtastic routing / forwarding nodes on the mountain peak near me put up by the local ham club along with their VHF repeaters. Can easily hit them from 40 miles out anytime. They are at about 7800ft elevation, LOS for a few hundred miles in all directions.

That’s incredible!! We need a lot more of this.

Agreed. One thing the old timers at local ham clubs have is prime property and towers.

I run a store and repeat node, off-grid and wifi connected at my home. It has direct line of sight to theountain towers. I can quite literally get from northern Arizona to Phoenix via just 2 or ,3 hops on mehtastic.

The biggest LIMFAC is the human element. Getting people trained up on it. It’s not difficult so easy enough to get people spun up.

Another factor that needs to be considered is keeping the firmware up to date. Again, it’s simple enough to do but if people haven’t done it before might take some figuring out. There’s also a potential issue of devices have been in storage and firmware is out of date. If you can’t talk with other devices that have been updated that COULD pose a problem.

Not issued we ran into during Helene but issues that could pose problems down the road.

Overall, fantastic setup and defitneky belongs in the pace plan.

Something we didn’t try but should be considered is putting repeaters on Drones to get them up high and connect a lot of nodes.
