What’s the encrypted messaging system/service du jour? I’ve been using Element / Matrix self-hosted but it doesn’t seem to be much of an ecosystem with Element kinda soloing the whole thing.

Same here, I want to love Matrix, but it's not really doing the thing a decentralized network should. Nostr DMs seem cool. Metadata be sus for now, and it's mostly crickets so far, but seems cool!
