One of the things I was shocked by when I visited San Francisco was how much Chinatown actually resembled China. 90% of the patrons in masks, no English, and a completely homogenous culture living exactly like they would in Beijing. I didn’t really understand why they even bothered to come across the Pacific. The goings on this week make perfect sense after having seen the area firsthand.

Save your “generalization” and “not everyone” comments. I understand that this is a blanket anecdotal statement that I noticed from MY TRUTH.

It's a pretty big trade up for them I imagine... Allowed to maintain their culture and day to day lives but without the danger of being disappeared or social scored into oblivion by the regime.

What happened this week?

I think in Chinatown most people have come decades ago. So they're even more old school than people in modern Chinese cities. And they probably don't speak English and never assimilated to American culture and only read and watch Chinese-American media, which gives them wrong info or very subcultural info so they're like that.

I'm more shocked you had the "gut" to visit SF. It used to be such a lovely city and I loved it but I can't imagine going there now.

Xi Jianping came to the city and there was lots of celebration. I am very ignorant on any of the cultural stuff, but it really stood out to me. Your assessment makes logical sense though.

I went out there for a wedding and was quite surprised about how bad it was. The couple is actually moving at year end.

Ah I see.

I don't follow any news any more. 😆😆

Ah I see. How bad is it?

Good for them for moving.

I saw a piece on it. I don’t watch the news either anymore. Snuck in through osmosis. It’s really bad. I truly couldn’t believe it. I am speaking just about the downtown area. Not the surrounding areas. I didn’t go there.

Wow

Like homeless camps and stuff?

Homeless, garbage, graffiti, and just general filth. It’s quite sad.

But yea whenever I see people living exactly how they would in their home country, I ask why do they bother to immigrate anyways.

I do know why, but I don't understand.

Exactly. I don’t want to judge them as I am sure the additional freedoms here are nice and made their lives better, but it’s just odd that there is zero change to their lifestyle.
