Indeed. Freedom of speech goes both ways. And freedom of speech has never meant freedom from consequences... just freedom from government persecution.

I think the US really has it right. The hate speech and defamation laws in most countries just muddy the waters terribly. Speech is not violence. Speech can be nasty, hateful, horrible, hurtful but it is not the same as hitting someone.
