Interesting point in the whole heated debate to me was that without the EU law forbidding the businesses to charge extra fees for the use of credit cards, there wouldn't be any heated debate, and everyone would peacefully choose whatever payment method they prefer at whatever costs.
In US it's not uncommon to have the credit card charges added to the bill, or SMBs commonly offering discounts when paying in cash. Then the customers also learn what is preferred, and courteous to do, and they can choose to follow it unless the cost of carrying cash around is too high for them.
