Parasitic elites constantly push for centralization because it's easier to control centralized points. Decentralization, in any form, shields citizens from their grip.

A perfect illustration of this is the United States' confiscation of gold. It was extremely easy to confiscate gold from citizens who held their gold in bank vaults, etc. because there are a lot fewer banks than there are citizens. It would have been extremely expensive to go door to door, house to house and take people's gold from them. So they chose to go to the several thousand banks because it was much much easier.
