The "removed app" (Amethyst) used up the most data, over a one-month period, even though I used it much less than the other ones (Kiwi is Nostrudel, Coracle, Primal, Nostter, Relay.Tools, Nostr.Band, Nostr.Build, and Snort).

I did the same things on Nostrudel and on #Amethyst, and I mostly use Amethyst over WiFi and Nostrudel over mobile. This data usage was the result of accidentally opening Amethyst on the bus or on my lunch break, for 5 minutes.

Days worth of intensive use of Freestr on mobile didn't even make the list.

I have questions.

I like Amethyst but it is very data heavy. What might you suggest as an alternative?

We started a thread, this morning.

Did you ever get an explanation for the data usage? I can't figure out what it's doing.

I wouldn't even mind the data usage, if it were an effect of actual usage, but it's just what happens when you clear the cache and reopen the app.

Pulls 1.7 GB of something or whatnot for reasons and because. 🤷‍♀️

And then it quickly goes up to 2.2 GB and my app slows down and I have to clear the cache, again.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I have reported this multiple times.

And I had the low-data settings on. So, media only loaded automatically under WiFi.

I was writing and reading nothing but plain text.

We’ve been looking into this and have found that limiting the number of relays one is connected to can help. Try picking a couple of relays and then retry Amethyst. I think you will need to uninstall and reinstall to reset the bandwidth counter.

One larger issue for the Nostr community is that joining another client automatically adds relays to your account. Im not sure which clients are doing this but i removed 8 relays from my account yesterday that i had not manually added.

I only have 6 relays and I don't have this problem on any other app. And I've used a lot of apps.

This just Amethyst.

Yeah +1 on this, the data usage is wild.. i only use 4 relays

Because "features" 😆

The USA has mostly unlimited plans but I understand Europe is different.

I changed mine to disable background data usage (although it only used 20 MB of background data) and the power usage from activity-based to optimized. It used 40% of the battery! But I don't think these changes will help much. It's the a version that didn't gobble up so much data?

I also asked some nostr devs about an interapplication nostr cache, if that's even possible on Android due to its security model.

Just have a private relay, like Nostrudel offers.

Or the database.

ok, great idea. I've seen one dev using ws://local.ip.address in a screenshot.

But I guess that depends on the clients recognizing that it's a non ssl websocket server.

I've had two other npubs tell me about the battery problem. I have no idea what all the app is doing, but it's doing a lot and it's doing more and more.
