Yep i routinely travelled 8-10 times a year between Aus (home base), China, SE Asia, US and EU for a number of years.
I always had a burner pixel phone with grapheneOS in factory default.
After getting through customs I'd restore the phone from USB drive.
Daily phone backup to USB.
Factory reset before getting on next flight.
So you carried your usb drive through customs as well? Couldn't they take that and demand password to your encrypted phone backup on the drive?
What about your laptop? Wiped too?
Do people transiting in, or travelling to, the USA get their devices searched their also?
