Only three clients display them to my knowledge. Amethyst, Snort, Nostrgram.
Anyone can create and assign them. Some have real meaning like for attendance of events, participation, access to relays and clients, gaming achievements, and of course memes.
How does one acquire said badges?
zap.stream will also show badges issued by streamer in chat if you accept them

So I'm currently using amethyst and ZEBEDEE/zbd i don't really remember what i did when logging in to amethyst and i have 2 different pubkeys, but they both seem to be the same profile although each of them are showing quite different content 🤷 could u help me be less confused?
As easy as it is to poke fun at these, I can EASILY see them representing educational credentials and competency certs and genuine organizational affiliation/membership in the not too distant future
Right. Some badges have more value or prestige than others. For example, my badge for attending Nostrica or being one of the first 1000 Nostr Plebs users.
Well, those are bragging rights, but I mean, like, Saif could give a Nostr badge for completing his economics course
Imagine creators distributing their content for free but selling badges as proof of support. I’d buy a “Bitcoin Standard” Nostr badge for a few bucks, 100% going to the author
And then imagine I want to hire someone with proficiency in some skill. There’s a guild of people who self-verify each member’s competency. I see the badge, I know they’re qualified to do the work

I occasionally have the urge to open Figma and attempt to completely redesign Amethyst, but I have the feeling my ideas would be rejected because they won’t be cluttered enough.
I believe nostr:npub1r0rs5q2gk0e3dk3nlc7gnu378ec6cnlenqp8a3cjhyzu6f8k5sgs4sq9ac worked on a UI rewrite a while back. It looks decent. I am a Material UI maximalist though, so I can't truly love something unless it's full material using all of the latest Android design elements. #materiolo
