The only unique thing lightning does well that has any appeal to me is microtransactions.

It's possible that microtransactions could be the key to defeating spam—even tiny amounts add up fast–as the cost imposed on spammers would seriously limit their reach.

But this does not change the fact that lightning in practice is insanely complex, frequently unreliable, and/or custodial.
