Tbh I view his finding of incompetent to stand trial by mental defect was because he had people in the system who liked him and didn't want him to be executed for treason.

That's possible but just the general way they treated him and try to recon his views by saying he retracted them later in life while his close friends say he didn't is very reminiscent of the way the commies tried to discredit dissidents.
