Imho a talk with technical arguments unfortunately leads to nothing there, even if you are 100% correct. This is due to several aspects such as, one does not know it differently, lack of expertise, lack of interest in the technology itself, influence by advertising and much more.

In such cases, it can be advantageous to refer away from tech and towards to a more political view: For example Planned obsolescence.

Every person should be aware by now that certain things that are often used are built in such a way that they quickly break or became unusable after the warranty expires. For example, there are coffee machines, smartphones, laptops or many other things that are daily used.

What would happen if those things are Open Source? One could repair them easily, install a android custom rom which still gets updates, install linux on a older laptop which then still can perform most of everyday tasks fast without the need for a new device.

They rant about planned obsolescence but in the same breath say "oh it doesn't affect me, I'll use $DEVICE until it dies and then get a new one maybe. It doesn't affect me what the corpos do"

He thinks we "overthink it all" and tries to push us back to blissful ignorance in windows on a daily basis and gah it is annoying af. To him 99.9999% of the world doesn't matter. All that matters is that he can do his job and make money and that "wokeism" doesn't get him and that people "go back to being centrist" whatever the hell that means...

We literally see him out of his home office for maybe 1hr a day...

They (mum and dad both) are in-fucking-furiating

But I see, there are obviously bigger differences multiple different cases and not only limited to tech stuff...

In this case, it would be advisable to get involved less in such discussions and to concentrate more on doing it better oneself, thus providing proof that these things work... When they realize that you could use your phone/laptop or in general any other things longer, because you cared about such aspects like repairability, openness and quality, then they might change their opinion somewhen themself.
