There really is no real reason to use the google play store. Not for devs and not for users either. F-droid, Obtanium and Aurora store (when you really need it) provide everything you may need on android. De-google as much as possible, it's worth it.

I've been using only F-droid and the odd side-loaded apk on my primary phone for about five years now.

(I do have another phone for government apps that require Google, but I don't carry it around).

This is the way. And government apps can probably be downloaded from Aurora store. Not all, but many.
