Not sure what the breach was but running your own node means running your own hot wallet. Can’t compare it with a good hardware wallet
Discussion
Running your own node means serving yourself your own addys from your zpub/xpub/ypub. It does not necessitate a hot wallet. Perhaps you are thinking of a lightning node (which I hear is in the phone. Lolol).
Bitcoin core doesn’t come with a wallet, your lightning node has on chain addresses where the words have been produced and displayed on a device connected to the internet and it always needs to be online. How would you avoid that?
A good hardware wallet like the #bitbox can not be compared to a node as far as I know. They serve different purposes.
You would avoid using lightning if you wanted to avoid using a hot wallet. Lololol.
A good offline signing device should be used with your node (proper base layer, not lightning). If it isn't, you are using someone else's node and they have all your current and future addresses.
Protect your zpubs folks.
