A crime is committed only by one who harms another or takes away from another’s livelihood. Therefore, if the ‘leaders’ of a society teach or educate the general population to have no regard for another’s right to freedom and happiness, but instead, to cheat, lie and exploit the material resources at the expense of all others (“to be the top of the food chain”), then the entire mass of people are a godless society, focused on mundane things of a temporal nature. Thus the modern society is mostly atheist, and the “Dahmers” abound. When basic goodness declines there arises ignorance and darkness. These are the times we live in…it should be of no surprise to the knower of the eternal self within.
