I feel like I agree with your idea on a personal level. I try to listen to people who I disagree with in order to learn. But that’s different from free speech where others are free not to listen and still everyone’s allowed to keep talking.

It's not a matter of "try to listen." You are obligated to hear people out. You owe it to them as part of their right to free speech. No one is free not to listen. If the village collectively chooses not to listen to someone, that is identical to him being unable to speak.
