Could anyone recommend a comprehensive and introductory book regarding "McCarthyism" , I often hear it mentioned and I have to admit that I don't really know much about it beyond it was a response to communism.

Not entirely and then the state and media turned on him and tried to make him out be some guy on an irrational witch hunt

And Diana West's American Betrayal is a good, and highly readable, backgrounder which explains the extent to which the US government had been infiltrated by Stalinists in the lead up to McCarthy's campaign.
