If I had to trace my deep-seeded distrust of government to one moment, it would be 19 years ago today when Katrina decimated New Orleans. Local and federal government alike fumbled. People relied on friends, family, and community.

I'll never forget that for as long as I live.

We felt it from a distance even. Now that my daughter goes to Tulane, I can see first hand how the community feels about authorities.
