I've run into a few that won't work without Google Play Services. You can set up a sandboxed play Services though and it should work.

ok. And if I don't know how to do this, I'm assuming I'll be able to figure out it.

Sandboxing = putting some apps into their own walled area so that they can't tap into the other data on the phone?

I believe all apps are sandboxed by default. For sure Google. If you go to the graphene app store you can install Play Services.
