I used to use bookmarks, but sometimes they fall out or my special needs son decides they don't belong there, so I've switched to using paperclips. They work well and are cheap and I can have lots of them for all of the books I'm reading including my son's school books.
As long as you’re not damaging the books.
I use old hoodie laces, bits of scratch paper, anything but dog earring.
You sound like my son. He prefers things like a wrinkled and torn piece of scratch paper to a formal book mark. He has used torn pieces of paper, that I would have thrown away years ago, as a book mark for years and gets upset if something happens to it. I guess he likes bookmarks with character.
