Essentially. Farcsster failed, so Coinbase wants to use their marketing dollars to try a second time around.
I'm sure it will do well in an alt season bull market, but eventually it will fail too.

You're the first person I've seen mention in in a year. Though I only use Nostr.
I've never seen anyone mention farcaster anywhere. However, I've never seen nostr mentioned anywhere except for on Bluesky when I search for it for loltakes
Also does this coinbase thing claim (/pretend) to be in any way decentralised? Is there centralised moderation? What is required for sign up? Email/phone number/coinbase account?
If the latter then it's really horribly tied with ID. I suppose it's not aiming to be nostr.
It's like the worst aspects of Nostr (saying the price of things) without any of the interesting bits.
the base wallet is just a rebranding of coinbase wallet. it's technically a self-custody wallet that supports seed phrases. it will pressure you into using an EVM network called Base which, despite being centralized, does inherit an acceptable amount of security from the ethereum network on account of being an OP stack rollup. it supports more networks as well. base wallet will also pressure you into using passkeys instead of seed phrases.
smart contracts and protocols that you interact with using wallets such as base are not guaranteed to be decentralized. but to be fair, the b*tcoin stuff like boltz isn't decentralized either. glass houses and that.
I was more thinking the social media aspect of it (I don't really understand the stuff you mentioned lol). Is the moderation centralised? I imagine so. What are their moderation policies? That I don't know, but I imagine it exists and is probably the same as/similar to most social media..?
the base app will use farcaster for microblogging and xmtp for instant messaging
farcaster has sections of its microblogging universe that can be carved out and controlled by moderators
