I wonder why to me the German "Milliarde" (or the French "millard") sound like more than the English "billion"*

* when I was a kid a billion had 12 zeroes, now it has only 9.

Milliard. Britain switched to short scale in 1974. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales
