The indictment is charging Roger with under reported his bitcoin holdings as a way to tax unrealized gains.
He reported what he sold for profit, but not the bitcoin he personally owned (and never sold).
The indictment also states that they’re trying him 10 years after the fact of his US citizenship renouncement, but fails to mention that during his process of renouncement was paying both Japanese and US taxes.
Point being, what the USG is doing is regulation by criminal enforcement. So whatever precedent is set from these court trials is what will be used against bitcoin holders.
Everyone from Ross Ulbrict, Ian Freeman, Jeremy Kaufman, Julian Assange, Kimdotcom, John McAfee, CZ, Roman Storm, Samourai and more is laying the legal framework to use against normal people.
The idea isn’t so much that they want to scare bitcoiners out of their bitcoin. Far from it. They WANT YOU to own bitcoin because they WANT to tax you when you use it. If they can scare bitcoiners INTO KYC/AMLcompliance and to making them too scared to USE their bitcoin and keep it in HODL mode on, the USG and TPTB will see that as a win.
