Number 86: Threadfin Bream.

This Fish Looks Edited — But, It’s real...

This is a threadfin bream, one of the most colorful fish you'll ever see. Native to the Indo-Pacific, its vivid stripes and neon shimmer make it look like it swam straight out of a digital painting.

The fish is a Sea Goldie, also known as a Lyretail Coralfish or Orange Basslet, and scientifically as Nemipterus virgatus (Golden Threadfin Bream).

Appearance:

Sea goldies are known for their vibrant colors. Females are typically orange-gold with a purple or blue stripe under the eye, while males are often a striking fuchsia or reddish color with an elongated third dorsal ray.

Habitat:

They are found in the Indo-West Pacific, inhabiting coral reefs, clear lagoons, small reefs, and steep slopes, often forming large schools over reefs.

Sex Change:

Like many anthias species, sea goldies are hermaphroditic, meaning they can change sex during their lifetime, usually from female to male to maximize reproductive output in competitive environments.

Commercial Importance:

The Golden Threadfin Bream (Nemipterus virgatus) is also a commercially important fish, particularly in the East China Sea and northern South China Sea

But those colors aren’t just for show — they help it blend into coral reefs, confusing predators and dazzling prey.

Despite its unreal appearance, this species is commonly caught and even eaten in parts of Asia.
