The US won't ostensibly default though, because their debts are denominated in their own currency. ie they owe US dollars, and given the choice between printing more and defaulting, they print more. The fact that so many other parties globally hold and use dollars allows them to mitigate (slightly) the inflationary effect of this money printing.
