Origins

The Guaraní people of Paraguay and surrounding regions first consumed mate centuries ago for its stimulating effects, viewing it as a “drink of friendship” in legends. European colonizers, especially Jesuits, later cultivated and spread it across the Southern Cone.[wikipedia +2]

Preparation

Fill a gourd halfway to three-quarters with dried yerba mate leaves, add hot (not boiling) water, and sip through the bombilla to filter the leaves. One person often prepares and refills it for the group, passing it in a circle without changing hands mid-round.[swoop-patagonia +2]

Benefits and Culture

Mate provides caffeine for energy without coffee’s jitters, plus vitamins like B vitamins, potassium, and antioxidants. It’s a symbol of hospitality, drunk daily in social settings, and Argentina celebrates National Mate Day on November 30.[republicoftea +2]
