Fees should drop once difficulty readjusts early next week since blocks will be mined more frequently.
What we don't know is how much fees will drop, if transactions will clear fully, and how long that will take if they do.

If you are waiting on a transaction to confirm and you trust the sender then funds aren't at risk. Worst case they send a new transaction with a higher fee in the future.
If you don't trust the sender then consider sending the unconfirmed utxo to yourself with a higher fee.
