St. John Cassian, after years in Eastern monasteries, sought wisdom from the desert fathers in Egypt. He questioned Abba Moses on the goal of monastic life. Moses explained that our aim is the purity of heart, resembling God. This is achieved not just through asceticism, but through divine love. All labors, fasting, vigils, and meditation should aim for this love, for without it, our efforts are in vain.

Lord, guide us toward purity of heart, that we may attain your divine love through the prayers of St. John Cassian.
