You can invest in Bitcoin, but that involves mining it. The gear and electricity you pay for are an investment into getting Bitcoin.

100%. Fiat deployed into mining is a 1-way flow of capital into the bitcoin economy.

This is why hashrate is the most critical number in the ecosystem.
