The skills required to self-custody #bitcoin can seem a lot more daunting than they actually are. I believe in reality, it's easy enough that most people should be able to handle it comfortably. Speaking from personal experience, though, the risk of losing real funds presents a significant enough mental hurdle that it provides a convenient excuse to put off learning how. What would be great is if there was a way for prospective new self-custodians to practice with self-custody tools risk-free.
The good news is there is a way: Testnet (Testnet3, Testnet4, or Signet). *FWIW, I have found Signet to be the closest to mimicking a real user experience.
The bad news is as much talk there is about urging the importance of self-custody, I NEVER see anybody EVER plugging Testnet as a completely risk-free way to learn how. This seems like HUGE and obvious missed opportunity.
#askNostr, How many people are we losing to ETFs, MSTR, exchanges in general, etc just because they don't realize tools like nostr:npub1cvqlzvmjercdn0ypsmv8f7j9lge6ahsnueh5rparh53wuswftv4q49yjt3 and nostr:npub1hea99yd4xt5tjx8jmjvpfz2g5v7nurdqw7ydwst0ww6vw520prnq6fg9v2's #SparrowWallet that offer the test modes necessary to develop the skills for self-custody risk-free even exist?
