Is searx better/more private than duckduckgo?
Honestly never had an issue with ddg. Why many are not recommending it anymore?

DDG censored the tank man image on the anniversary last year. Consider hosting your own instance of whoogle or using one of these instances https://github.com/benbusby/whoogle-search#public-instances

Do you get better privacy by using your own instance or by using a public one?
IMO I guess it depends on how you think about it. Essentially your trusting whoever is hosting the instance to not make changes to the code that would allow for tracking.
If you have the server space for it running your own is probably the most private due to less 3rd party trust. i'm sure that there are plenty of instances out there that are not publicly advertised.
but i think if you're going to use public instances either use one hosted by somebody that you at least marginally trust or i think there's a function to switch instances every few searches somewhere in the settings....
I been looking for an alternative to ddg as it seems incapable of find my website when search the 3 words anymore (used to come up 1st or 2nd page in the organic results) it will happily find dodgyconomist approved FUD site, and numerous Forbes NYT BBC hit pieces. It’s definitely been de boosted.
