I still don’t understand why I should get paid relays, or what the relays are really… It hasn’t affected me at all though, I’m still having lots of fun with what I have!

Bots or spam accounts most likely won’t spend to access paid relays. And if you only have paid relays added, you will experience much less spam, scams etcetc. If a paid relay is enabled with your other relays, it won’t have that kind of effect.
Furthermore, if people who want to keep themselves maybe more separated and distanced from the free relay community, then they could easily just be contactable on a single paid relay
So it’s like having a private alt account on all one account?
It’s like having a private server you can access. If I disable all relays but one paid one, only people that have that same paid relay as me will see the content posted.
