I don't think the optics really matter, the fact is they're being bankrolled (probably ultimately to Alex Soros since George is all but retired) to break things because it's what they do.

The more destruction they cause and the more riot cops and military they bring out, they more they succeed. They want less stability so that a power vacuum is created that they can use to their advantage. Classic Bolshevism.

In fact it's probably beneficial to them to keep switching flags and make everyone confused and keep the chaos semi-fresh. See Alinsky's rules 6-8.
