When you run a lightning node, do you need to use tor or a vpn? Is your IP leaked in every transaction?

You can probably use both, there’s a website called 1ML that’ll show you both the public vs Tor address

It's possible to go TOR only if you want that level of privacy.

Is slow transactions a problem with tor?

I haven't tried it. I can't get a static IP at home, and I don't feel like spending the $$ to spin up another full node on a VPS somewhere. That's money I could buy more Bitcoin with. Plus I'm already spending a bit of cash right now to run a free public Nostr relay in the cloud.

it's up to the user. a lot of simple out of the box nodes like umbrel default to run over tor iirc, but the user can definitely set up a VPN over clearnet if they prefer. I do know a lot of people don't love when people use tor because it slows down routing and makes for annoying channel partners. but ive only heard this, haven't opened channels yet.

Yeah that’s what I heard too. I was just wondering whether it really mattered if people knew my ip.

I mean that's something everyone has to decide for themselves for privacy and/or safety. different people have different tolerances for who knows what 🤙
