Spartan Mindset 🥶

When the King of Sparta was asked why his city never had any walls, he pointed to his soldiers and replied, "These are Sparta's walls."

When he was asked how far Sparta's territory extended, he lifted his spear and replied, "As far as this could reach."

When a Persian messenger demanded water and earth as a token of submission, Sparta's King Leonidas famously replied, "Go dig it yourself," and threw the messenger into a well.

When the Persian King, Xerxes, demanded that the Spartans surrender and lay down their weapons, they replied, "Come and take them."

Xerxes boasted that his arrows would block out the sun. The Spartans fearlessly retorted, "Then we will fight in the shade."

When King Philip of Macedon warned the Spartans that if he were to invade Laconia, their homeland, they would never rise again. The Spartans defiantly replied with a single word, "if."

When describing the Spartan mindset, the ancient historian Plutarch wrote, "The Spartans do not ask how many are the enemy, but where they are."
