Chevron et el. Are butt hurt. The USA has enough oil, after all fracking opened up supply tenfold. So oil is actually not it.

Most likely Chinese and Russian influence, base building and presence.

Controlling that area too (Panama etc. )

It's just imperialism.

However control ties into OPEC supply.

Currently there is an oversupply, oil is priced relatively cheaply with lots of supply.

So it ain't about the oil. It's about sending a message to China.
