The service charged a fee, which served as anti sybil attack. It was an innovative non custodial foss business model. It is something to find inspiration from.
Profit from operating a service isn't overtly illegal. They wrote code and talked shit about the state of finance. They operated in a legal loophole and the state was threatened by it. But the whole point of bitcoin is to exist outside of the scope of the state.
I find that there is a unspoken assumption that the only use or the only intention was to aid criminal activity. But I nor the vast percentage of users have anything too with any illegal activity at all. Even the prosecution only points to a small amount of the total as being from overt crimes.
Anyone can both use whirpool for kyc coin and pay taxes on spends. They are mutually exclusive.
Envelope companies are held liable for the profits from selling envelopes that hide stolen drug money.
