Kurosawa made mostly black and white films and only transitioned to color at the end of his career. If I remember correctly (there's another film before this that is in color and this is the last, but his eyesight started going as he was advanced in age. He spent something like 10 years painting watercolor storyboards for this film and used them to match the frames and such.
