There are a couple of books Neal Stephenson wrote before the white paper that are good reads - deep dives into cryptography and economics. The first one is Cryptonomicon, and the second is a trilogy called The Baroque Cycle. Both are page turners, but with deep knowledge sprinkled in. If you like them his pure SciFi book Anathem is great too.
