I'm making a mixtape for my kids to listen to while studying. Any other suggestions?

I think they like these random lowfi beat channels on YouTube, but I'm trying to expand their palate.

I started with Brian Eno, but I'm not versed in this genre.

Can't really go wrong with sticking on soma.fm too. Drone Zone and Deep Space channels.

I lied. I'm back lol because I like the wuestion. I would also veer into more drone like Stars of the Lid which I find perfect to read to

I’d have paid more attention in school if I’d had that tape!

No Dolby?

I like the hiss. Dolby noise reduction works well however and has its own effect. I actually sometimes like to listen with NR on. The hiss goes away and its quite clean.

But recording with it on and listening to it off creates some artifacts.

I was tempted to get a dbx box but then I'm like, why don't I just make a CD?

Yeah I think it also really depends on the type of music and tapes you are using. Type 2 really don’t need it I guess.

I just bought a revised AIWA cassette player from the late 80s and I’m now experimenting with recording from Spotify onto cassettes with and without Dolby using a Philips 900 series cassette deck.

Oh nice. I think it's more what you prefer. That's what I'm finding out. The tape medium really let's you dial it in.

The deck, the tape, the level, hell maybe even the time of day all make an impact on the recording.

For me, this is a feature not a bug.

I'm happy to see another tape head here!

I’m 100% sure your npub triggered me to dive back into this stuff! Only to discover that my old tapes were recorded under less optimal circumstances 30 years ago 😂

Bitpunk.fm. Making tapes cool again since 2024.

Boards of Canada: The Campfire Headphase, Bonobo: Animal magic, dial M for monkey

Steve Reich Music for 18 Musicians is cool, not ambient but the sort of thing I could have on while reading.

Yeah, also adding the legend Steve Roach.

And along the same lines Philip Glass. Why not.

Terry Riley - rainbow...

Morton Feldman

Not really ambient but pretty special and nice for a mixtape , probably not for studying https://youtu.be/J-P7yVqJ9Wk

carbon based life forms, aphex twin, william orbit, orbital, juno reactor (ok maybe a bit more upbeat these ones), edward artimiev (russian composer who did a lot of spooky music for tarkovsky movies), global communication, spacetime continuum, been finding lots of new stuff lately... but some ones that i've followed for years, Aes Dana, Subheim, Forest Swords, Mooze (composer of much of the Stalker game soundtracks) and i forget the name... alexey omelchuk (Metro and Stalker games)

it is seriously my favourite music genre... these days i don't listen to much of it because i've got hooked on this "soundscape genre" of music on youtube with 1-10 hour long undulating mostly semi-automatically generated mood sounds... and general sounds... one that stands out that is a bit more upbeat is The Inner Voices Project

oh yeah and i would be remiss to leave out my friend Kanalen Pluh, bulgarian composer who did a couple of things (look for him on bandcamp, he does this doomy ominous slow throbbing beat stuff with weird samples and that english philosopher guy)

oh yeah and then there's the whole "psybient" genre in general, ah crap, too many to remember
