I feel like this is what the Culture Warriors on both sides sort of miss.

Women and men do best when they advance in lockstep, with men staying slightly ahead, in the mean. That's such a complex structure to define, as it's so relative, that nobody wants to hear it.

The difference between the mean and outliers in particular areas is what causes the strife, I think.

If a woman excells in some typically-male role, the socially conservative culture warriors freak out because "she's left her natural place" and the socially liberal culture warriors immediately call for quotes to ensure that women make up at least 50% of the role-fulfillers.

And vice-versa for typically-female roles.

Everyone fights the idea that society can be designed to accomodate the hierarchical mean, while being tolerant enough to allow for some outliers.

What I've experienced a lot of is absolutist thinking about biological sex. Pigeon-holing people into the opposite sex based upon a few unusual traits, resulting in pressure upon them to behave as the opposite sex would in all traits or even insisting that they transform everything about themselves to line up with those traits; so that they are congruent.

So, assertive women or very tall women are told that they're "basically men". Men who make for good caretakers or like to cook dinner for their family are told that they're "basically women".

It's like we've just completely abandoned the idea that the sexes are circa 30% redundant, so that you can expect a commensurate overlap in traits, and this is part of human design because it ensures survival of the species, when mothers and fathers can substitute for each other. A strict separation of the sexes into roles and traits creates a more brittle family structure, and societies that attempt this quickly fall behind because they are not maximizing human potential and they are literally fighting natural selection.
