The Vietnam War had no war bond campaign unlike previous wars because they knew the war was too unpopular and the bonds would fail to sell.

The US was forced to officially end the gold standard in 1971 after attacks on the currency. Attacks that would obviously have failed if the gold standard hadn't already been secretly abandoned.

At least in America, the original purpose of fiat was to engage in wars the people did not want.

Nam is one of many. Even if Americans had initially funded a war such as Iraq, or Afghanistan I doubt it would be funded repeatedly for decades.
