The most striking thing about third-world countries, including Brazil, is how myopic people are when it comes to second- and third-order effects (with the exception of politicians, who understand this very well and often use it to their advantage).
Recently, our Supreme Court (our non-elected kings) ruled that women who suffer domestic violence have the right to receive 15 days of paid leave from work if they need time to recover.
Immediate effect: 15 days of leave paid by their employers.
Second-order effect: Hiring women may become associated with potentially higher costs.
Third-order effect: Fewer job opportunities for women, reduced financial independence, and increased vulnerability to domestic violence.
