Yep. Bitcoin has to be easy and cheap in order to make it to the masses, without sacrificing its foundational stones. That's why lightning and custodial wallet are great.
Newbies yes. But they will need to eventually or the fees won’t make sense to them.

What keeps us from adopting those?
Lightning is a contract between willing participants. Bitcoin is the court. You can always to go to court to enforce a contract but you don’t need to when no one is breaking the rules.
