I discovered a couple years ago that a number of popular sayings like this are shortened versions of the original, and sometimes have the opposite meaning!

"Blood is thicker than water" was described to me as meaning "Blood (family ties) is stronger than water under the bridge (time spent together-- friends).

I've heard the original saying is "The blood of covenant is thicker than the water of the womb".

I’ve heard some of these! I can just never remember them. It’s very interesting and there are a lot of other terms we use that, after you hear the correct terms, literally make no sense at all!
