Awesome. I read somewhere that using tags here is basically useless but I didn’t bother to verify at that time.
Depends on the tags.
If they're not bitcoin or nostr related they will indeed not be of much use at this stage of adoption. I make #ambient soundscapes for example but there's not many people on Nostr that like it enough to follow this tag. One day maybe :)

Not really, not that I know of at least 😁 We're still very early. To get consistent signal on topics you like, following the right people is still key. However, you can find these people by searching for particular hashtags; even if they only used it once, that's enough to find them!

Not many clients really have a "popular hashtags" section. I think Ditto.pub does, and the "Topics" tab in Primal's discovery section is actually just recently popular hashtags, too. Outside of those two, I don't know of any others.
Best thing I can suggest is thinking of what tags someone MIGHT use for a topic you want to discuss and search for that hashtag to see if anyone has been using it already. If they have, chances are that others will look for that topic using that hashtag, too.

The asknostr hashtag is probably the most functional one by far, there aren't any others like it on nostr. The vast majority of hashtags on nostr are full of spam with no filtering tools available
